Went Taka to get JR pass.... exchange rate used was 13.2... superb~ haha~... cheap cheap... good deal to get JR pass now...

Then went Marks and Spencers to get thread 60 stockings to act as my thermal wear for my bottoms... and ended up also buying 2 woollen sweaters for my trip... Matsumoto Castle

Matsumoto Castle - the oldest castle in Japan, listed one of the 4 treasured castles. Took us about 3hrs to get there from Tokyo and we sat a taxi for the 1st time in Japan! Was admiring the streets of Matsumoto city as we drove to the castle... Clean, pretty... Seems like a very nice place to stay...

Bad Hair Day

Bad hair day for the Tsuru... dunno what animal this is... looks like a cross between a porcupine and a monkey... he was just staying put in the tree when we passed him while going to the east side of the Ueno zoo... Haha~ very mild animal... we were all crowding around him and practically pushing the camera into his face... and still no reaction...Tsuru's hair looks like mine last time... shooting off in different directions... argh.... my hair has broken in many places... rebond too many times liao... think the last rebond using the korean product caused the hair to break... should have stuck with the japanese ones... this friday going to 'save' my hair... dunno what will happen.... Tooth pain some more... no time to see dentist... $*&#(#$Q&

My Fave Animals in the Zoo

Had very cute encounters with 2 of the animals in the zoo - 1 is the gorilla and the other is the red panda.

1) Gorilla... think the animals very 'aware' of their surroundings... and they got their own character... not blur blur one... they are aware of pple looking at them and taking photos.... and hor... they will even stay still and pose for you... saw this behaviour with the gorilla... the deer also like this, and some of the monkeys... My fave is this gorilla here. At first he was just sitting there... looking at us through the glass panels... we were all excitedly pointing at him and taking photos... and he just looked at us coldly...Then he got fed up and turned ard... and showed us his butt!
I walked ard to the next panel and caught his face.... He's sulking... haha~
2) Next is the red panda... This red panda is famous... There is one by the name of "fuuta" who can stand on his hind legs... However, Fuuta-kun is at the Chiba zoo, so this red panda is the same kind but cannot stand up.... The whole enclosure as empty when i got there.... there was this sign stuck on the post asking us to look up into the trees.... for his fave resting spot....And there he was.... lying there.... and he laid there for a good 15mins without moving... i was standing there.... camera in hand... ready to take a shot of him....Then some Japanese teenagers started calling him name and asking him to look here.... and he did! just a split second look! I was one of the few who managed to take a shot of his face... Pic is a bit blur becos of the quick reaction to take him.... His face... Cute right?

Ueno Zoo

Yes~ I went to the zoo... haha~ Had a very strong urge to go to a zoo after watching a drama special on Asahiyama Zoo. So I specially made time to go to the Ueno Zoo. 15yrs since I last visited a zoo... And... I enjoyed it!!! Haha~ Cant believe it myself too.... hahahahah~... Now... I very gian about Hokkaido... And I got 2 tickets to Japan that I need to use before 31 Mar 2007... Think i will go the Asahiyama Zoo.... Yippee!!!

I reached Ueno Zoo at ard 1.30pm... After I went to book my train tickets and getting used to the sights and sounds in Ueno... Been 2yrs since I last came back.... I thought the animals were a lethargic lot... Most of them were sleeping when I went ard their cages...

Panda RinRin... Sleeping when I passed by her cage...
Gorilla taking a nap... The way she sleeps... so human like... haha~
2 Observations i made from the zoo....
1) Japanese pple are very orderly and very considerate... They lined up to see the animals and no one hogged the place... The minute they have seen enough, they will move off and let the back pple move to the front. No need to fight to get to the front... High quality of life...
2) Japanese kids know the animals very well... They know the long long scientific names of the animals and... the animals pet names! Like the panda is RinRin, one of the monkeys is Kei, etc... They can even differentiate 1 monkey from the next... amazing!

My Room~

This was my room for the 1st 5 nights~ It only takes 4 steps from the table to the door... Small but I had a lot of fun in it... I even fell asleep in the bath on the 1st night... too tired... when i woke up, the water was almost cold... haha~
Weather in Tokyo when I set out for my sightseeing on Sat afternoon... Good weather ne~...

Touching Down in Japan and Green Car!

Touched down at Narita Airport on 23rd Sept 7.3-am... Miracously, the typhoon was deflected off more east and it didnt come onto the land... All we had was some turbulence during the flight and the skies were cloudy... So we managed to reach Narita airport without any delay...

Customs clearance was slow... and there was a short episode with the customs officer who insisted on opening up my lugguage during the "interview".... #$&#*# But I was more amused than annoyed when he poked ard my lugguage and asked me questions about what I brought...Then went to change to the JR East pass... for unlimited travel on all JR trains in Eastern Japan... Since yen is cheap recently... we decided to splurge a bit and get the GREEN pass... business-class travel on the trains... heeehee~ Went to the 'midori no mado-guchi" to change the pass... Over the next few days, we became very accquainted to this sign as we went frequently to make changes to our train schedules... haha~ This is the green car train ticket... "green" haha~ first time taking green car... wonder what's its like... Heard that the green car carriage is more spacious and more stable... with better soundproof to the rumbling noise of the train...
This is the signboard to announce the arrival of the trains... used in most stations.... Mine is the 8.52am train...
This my train! Narita Express~ Can see the green car sign on the outside of the train...
The inside of the train~ Its really spacious and I can stick my legs right out straight... It's a far cry from the Ordinary Car where the seats are close to each other... Normally there are 4 seats in a row... But Green only has 3 seats! And the chairs are thicker and softer... Businesss-class is real different!Fell asleep soon after the train started and after eating my bento... "Taste of Autumn" haha~ practically starving after the night flight with insufficient food served... and i didnt had much dinner the night before....

Kamikochi

Went to Kamikochi in Nagano today. Its a plateau and it serves as a base to the Japan alps. Very pretty place. Pity today very cloudy and it started raining in the afternoon. So had to cut short my hike and I didnt take as photos as I would like to. Saw wild monkeys today! They were totally used to people and didnt run away when we approached. In fact, they even walked along side us on the path. Think they are used to people already. And the Japanese do not feed them with tidbits, so they do not have the habit of "attacking" people for food.

Kanna cheated...

Went to Nikko today.... Very nice place. Will recommend to everyone to go there.... But hor... I kanna cheated at Nikko's world heritage site - Toushougu... The travel guide says its ostentious... Its more than ostentious... Even more chinese than chinese temples... All gold, a lot of dragons...

How I kanna cheated? I bought this entrance ticket to Toushougu for 1300yen, which entitles me to entrance to all parts of the temple.... So Toushougu is famous for 3 things, besides its design. The 3 things are - the 3 monkeys, the sleeping cat and the crying dragon. Ok... kanna cheated by the sleeping cat... Since the sleeping cat entrance fee already included in the price, of cos i must see it mah... ok lor... so i stepped into the temple area and started walking inwards...

As I walked... jialat... why the road stretching so far in... and wah lau! so many staircases...! and very steep some more... see the pic... this is only half of 1 section of all the staircases... Think 1 section got about 50plus steps and there's 3 of them... hard to climb some more...
Halfway... I start to think... wah lau... so much effort just to see 1 cat... never mind... finally walk all the way up... panting like crazy... NO CAT! just a bell sitting on a tomb! and i walked round the area 2 times... still never find... I bueh tahan... i ask the temple assistant... and she said the cat is downstairs!!! WAH LAU! All my effort....

OK lor... so i slowly walk down... no railing some more plus my phobia of going down steep staircase... so heart wrenching!... I walked all the way to the entrance... and WAH LAU! the cat is there... AT THE ENTRANCE! ARGH!

See the cat....
And hor! there is sign right below it! And I walked right past it when i went thru the entrance! the sign even says... walk to the end to-and-fro will take 20mins... tell u all hor... the timing by the japanese is different one... we must times 3 for our pace... can die....

Finally!!!!

Finally.... I ate it!!!! been trying to buy this mont blanc cream puff for the past 2 nights... 210yen... always sold out... finally... TODAY! Monday! 25th Sep! I managed to lay my hands on 1... and its really yummy.... I want to eat again! haha~!
And my lunch today... at the rest house near chuzenji temple... 1575yen... YUMMY! Cant believe i can wait till the 3rd day to eat my fave food...

PrawnKing's Shopping

Hello... I got your stuff.... Went on the first night... haha~ I tried to look for the items... then too difficult... I gave up and asked the shop assistant to settle the list for me... Hahaha~ Some hor... no more liao... I asked the shop assistant where to find... He said "internet will have, but will be more expensive..." Here's what I managed to get...
Plus.... Guess what?! I signed up for the Tomica point card for you.... can collect points and exchange for "not for sale" items... This time collected 104pts!!! So i chose a "not for sale" gold car for you.... dun think you will be interested in the mini cup...

But hor... I review the list picture hor.... some things bought wrongly... maybe the shop assistant took double... Got 1 extra toyota land cruiser, 1 extra red ear pokemon, 1 less blue ear pokemon... I dun think can change the extra ones, but i try and go back and see if still can get the blue ear pokemon... see if u want the wrong items or not... its ok if u dun want...

Forbidden City, Beijing, China

Went to Forbidden City on the 2nd day. The place was massive, but a large majority of the place was under renovation, in preparation for the 2008 Olympics. Didnt manage to get many photos as the weather wasnt very good. Dark clouds starting looming overhead and everything looks gloomy... it started pouring a short while after we reached the place...

KungFu Show at Red Theatre Beijing

We went for this Kung-fu show at the famous Red Theatre in Beijing on the 2nd night. The theatre itself was still 80's style, but it was more posh as compared to the one on the 1st night and the air-con was definitely stronger. And they had displays on the walls with narration of the story in different languages. Yep... There was a story to the performance, not like the previous night where it was a collection of performances from different people. This one, actually had a storyline to it.

The performance was also on a much larger scale. As seen in the pics below, they had more than twice the number of performers, they had better costumes and every single one of them wore make-up! In the previous night, there may be only 1 person who could break metal rods with their heads (1 of Shaolin's famous kung-fu performances), but in this one, they featured about 12 performers breaking metal rods with their heads at the same time. This show would be worth a visit if you are interested.
On a much serious note, there was some unhappiness with our tour guide with the arrangement of this 2nd show. As mentioned, the 1st show was included in our tour, so there was no discrepancies in the expectations, etc. However, from the time we finished the show, the tour guide started introducing to us this 2nd show and how famous, how good it was and how it is not to be missed... The tour guide also told that by going to the show, he would be able to earn points with the theatre, and then get a better allocation of seats in future.... Before we knew it, night fall came... and all the sudden... all 79 of us (bus A and bus B) were brought to the Red Theatre. We were then given tickets and then ushered very quickly into the theatre, told to sit only at the sides by the theatre pple and the show commenced. Nothing was suspected till the last dinner we had before we left Beijing. The tour guide suddenly announced that we all still owed him 180yuan each for the show on the 2nd night... We were shocked!!! Up till now and even after the show, there was no mention of payment and the tour guide certainly did not tell us that we had to pay extra to see the show.... And moreover, its 180yuan, the most expensive seats in the house... And we were only able to sit at the sides... which based on the seat plan, was only 100yuan!!! However, none of us made much complaints and each of us paid up...

Being logical and cool-headed, we didnt kick up any fuss on the spot. Anyway, it wouldnt make any sense and we had absolutely no grounds of winning, especially being in a foreign land. However, the next day, our group leader called back the Singapore travel office and lodged a complaint to tour manager regarding what happened in Beijing. The tour manager handled it well, by arranging an extra show for us Hangzhou and having our Hangzhou tour guide apologise to us and with this made clearly known to the tour management, we didnt have a 2nd occurance of anything similar during our remaining 6 days in China.

I dont know what happened to the Beijing tour guides, but I surely hope that they will not do it again and no one else will encounter this again. There is also another morale to the story... By not kicking a fuss on the spot and giving feedback to the correct people, we were able to resolve this issue in a more amicable manner, which was better and a more safer option for us being in a foreign land and there was no hard feelings (i hope) ... A message to people who intend to go China for in tour packages, please be aware of such possibilities and be careful, lest ending up with a hole in your pocket.

Beijing Acrobatics Show

We were treated to an acrobatics show on the first night of our tour... well... not exactly treated... we paid for it in our tour package... The tour guide bought us to this theatre, the name I already forgot, but the seats and decoration were old... something similar to our movie theatres in the 80's... The performances were good... There was a variety of Shaolin monks 'wushu' performances, acrobats, dance, etc... Though we were all very tired, having flew 7 hrs to Beijing, think most of us enjoyed the show.
